Fed: Saddam had proper trial says Howard

DONE

There's been a mixed reaction in Australia to the execution of SADDAM HUSSEIN.

JOHN HOWARD says a fair and proper trial was given to the former Iraqi dictator.. but
Labor says he shouldn't have been executed.

The prime minister says it's significant that SADDAM was given a proper trial and due
process was followed.

Mr HOWARD's called the Iraqis heroic because they were willing to go through the process
.. after going through all the pain and suffering he had caused.

But Labor leader KEVIN RUDD says even though the former dictator had committed mass
murder .. he did not deserve to be sentenced to death.

Mr RUDD doubts SADDAM's death will have any impact on the deadly sectarian unrest in Iraq.

Labor's foreign affairs spokesman ROBERT MCCLELLAND also says he doubts whether SADDAM's
execution will contribute to the resolution of the sectarian violence plaguing Iraq.

Mr MCCLELLAND says SADDAM should have been given a life sentence instead ... because
he's the type of criminal who deserves to rot in jail.
