NSW: Govt cannot explain why banned doctor continued to work
By Margaret Scheikowski and Vincent Morello
SYDNEY, Feb 27 AAP - The NSW government says it cannot explain how a banned doctor
was able to continue working in the health system, allegedly mutilating or sexually abusing
hundreds of women.
NSW Health Minister Reba Meagher today apologised to the up to 800 women who have complained
about the conduct of Dr Graeme Steven Reeves, saying she was sorry they had had "such
an awful, awful experience".
In 1997, the NSW Medical Board ruled Dr Reeves "suffers from personality and …

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
10 May 2011 -- Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has agreed with several Hollywood studios to offer their films for rent in the US through its online video sharing website YouTube, the Financial Times reported.
With the current deal, YouTube will add about 3,000 new titles from film producers like Warner Brothers, NBC Universal and Sony Pictures Entertainment to its film rental catalogue.
Users spend 15 minutes daily on YouTube's website on the average against five hours in front of the TV, but this is going to change, Salar Kamangar, head of YouTube, commented.
At the same time, Hollywood film makers have become more likely to ink deals with websites after sales of DVDs, which used to be a key generator of profits, collapsed.

WA:Scientists say ecstasy could treat cancer
The illicit drug ecstasy could be redesigned and used to treat blood cancers, according
to a team of researchers from the University of Western Australia and the University of
Birmingham in England.
Papers by the UWA's Associate Professor MATTHEW PIGGOTT and PhD students MICHAEL GANDY
and KATIE LEWIS show compounds similar to ecstasy, scientifically known as MDMA, kill
cell lines derived from blood cancers such as lymphoma, myeloma and leukaemia.
The researchers say MDMA analogues have been modified to eliminate the psycho-activity
seen in ecstasy.

PORTLAND --
Electronic word-of-mouth is rapidly replacing the old-fashioned kind.
Tourism-related businesses were encouraged Thursday at the Governor's Conference on Tourism to embrace social media as a way to reach customers, about two-thirds of whom rely on the Internet as a primary source for information when they plan trips.
"Philadelphia is a very old city and we need young tourists," Meryl Levitz, president and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corp., said in describing her organization's use of Facebook, Twitter and the like to reach potential visitors. "We decided this is one way to get them."
Levitz, who noted that tourism in Philadelphia has tripled since the marketing company was formed in 1997, said social and traditional media are so intertwined these days that businesses that don't use both are missing the boat.
As an example, she noted that thousands of tweets were sent out after free agent pitcher Cliff Lee signed with the Philadelphia Phillies late one night in December. So Levitz's organization, which is funded by a hotel tax in Philadelphia County, immediately saw it as another way to promote the city, particularly since Lee chose Philadelphia after turning down a more lucrative offer from the New York Yankees.
"Dear Cliff," read the billboard the organization hastily put up. "You are ... This is ... I promised myself I wouldn't get choked up. Welcome home."
That billboard, in turn, prompted Internet chatter, and photos of it were shared on Facebook.
Communicating that way can be as powerful as word-of-mouth was back when "people actually talked to each other, face-to-face," Levitz said.
Philadelphia's approach is exactly how social media should be used to promote tourism, said Amanda O'Brien of Portland-based Hall Internet Marketing, who has advised tourism-related businesses on how to use social media in marketing.
O'Brien said traditional hard-sell approaches don't work in social media. Instead, a business that caters to tourists must foster a community, with people offering information on how they enjoyed their stay at a campground or hotel, and on interesting things to do in the area.
"People love that insider tip, like the place with the best egg sandwich in the morning," she said. "It's a soft sell, but people trust you more."
That's the approach the Maine Office of Tourism is using with its Facebook page, said Carolann Ouellette, deputy director of the office. The page includes photos of interesting spots in Maine, trivia questions, a weekly "shout-out" to a Maine town, and sometimes totally random items, such as a recent post musing about how snow-covered bales of hay look like frosted Shredded Wheat cereal.
"What's great is how viral it is," Ouellette said. "It's more engagement, being part of a conversation, which is different from the traditional advertising (approach) of 'Sending a message.' "
Ouellette said the office hopes to build on its forays into new- media channels with the upcoming launch of a lobster app for smart phones.
The app will have lobster facts, information on Maine restaurants having specials on lobster, and recipes, with more information added regularly, she said.
Also at Thursday's conference, tourism officials said visits to Maine rebounded last summer from 2009, which was probably the state's worst year for tourism.
Steve Lyons, the tourism office's director of marketing, said state surveys indicate about 9.5 million people visited Maine last summer, "a marked improvement over 2009, which we really don't like to talk about."
In 2009, the depths of the recession and unusually cool and rainy weather depressed visits to the state.
Official estimates are that 8.3 million people visited in the summer of 2009, a 16.8 percent drop from 2008.

Fed: Housing groups say stimulus is urgently needed
By Susanna Dunkerley
CANBERRA, Feb 10 AAP - Private builders and public housing groups say the government's
economic stimulus package will benefit their sectors.
The government has put $6.6 billion on the table to increase the national stock of
public and community housing by about 20,000 units.
The package contains measures worth $42 billion aimed at heading off a looming recession
and jobs losses of up to 300,000.
The Master Builders Association (MBA) on Tuesday told a Senate inquiry the plan would
deliver a welcome boost to the sector.
"This will provide much needed jobs ... the housing sector is extremely sluggish at
the moment," MBA chief executive Wilhelm Harnisch told a public hearing of the inquiry
in Canberra.
The housing sector was in dire need of the stimulus.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) said the plan was better than cutting charges
or taxes associated with new homes.
But HIA policy officer Chris Lamont said some amendments would be needed to speed up
the housing approval process.
"There is a requirement for an amended procurement strategy ... in order to deliver
this package efficiently and quickly," he told the inquiry.
The public housing sector also welcomed the plan, saying there was a shortfall of 180,000
low-income dwellings.
National Affordable Housing Summit chairman Julian Disney said it was a "very badly
needed package".
"The gravity of the need ... is huge," he said, adding there were up to a million Australians
finding rental properties unaffordable.

NSW: Woman charged with drink driving after four-car crash
SYDNEY, April 17 AAP - A woman has been charged with drink driving after a four-car
crash in the northern Sydney suburb of Pymble.
Police said the woman was driving north along Mona Vale Road about 9.20pm (AEST) yesterday
when her car hit a stationary car at the intersection with Telegraph Road and pushed that
car into another in front of it, which in turn hit a fourth car.
The woman got out of her car and was seen staggering over the road in attempt to stop
oncoming traffic before getting into the second of the three cars in front of her own
and attempting to start it, police said.
No one was seriously injured in the collision.
The woman allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.210.
A 40-year-old Belrose woman has been charged with high range PCA (prescribed concentration
of alcohol), driving with a suspended licence, failing to comply with driving conditions
and driving a conveyance without permission from the owner.
She was released on bail and is due to appear at Hornsby Local Court on May 7.
Earlier, a woman was charged with drink driving after allegedly returning a blood alcohol
reading of 0.215 on the NSW south coast.
A 25-year-old Moruya woman was arrested after she was stopped by police for a roadside
breath test on the Princes Highway at Batemans Bay at 1.20pm (AEST) yesterday, police
said.
The woman allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.215 after testing at Batemans
Bay police station.
She has been charged with high range PCA, driving while disqualified and driving an
unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
She was refused bail and was due to appear at Narooma Local Court today.

BRISBANE, Dec 13 AAP - Police believe heavy rain in south-east Queensland may have
contributed to a fatal motorcycle accident on the Gold Coast.
The bike was travelling south along Townson Avenue at Palm Beach around 10.20pm (AEST)
yesterday when the rider lost control and crashed into a parked car.
He died at the scene.
Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the crash and believe heavy
rain in the area at the time may have been a contributing factor.
Meanwhile, a woman has been killed in a single vehicle crash at Canungra, south of Brisbane.
Police say the woman's car left Beaudesert Nerang Road around 12.30am (AEST) and crashed
into a tree.
The woman, the only occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

Fed: I'll close any loophole allowing Hicks to profit: Ruddock

Fed: I'll close any loophole allowing Hicks to profit: Ruddock
SYDNEY, April 30 AAP - Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock says he will amend the
law retrospectively if it turns out a loophole will allow Australian Guantanamo Bay detainee
David Hicks to profit from telling his story.
A book about Hicks' experiences, written by journalist Leigh Sales, is due to be published
tomorrow by Melbourne University Press.
The Dean of Law at the University of Sydney, Ron McCallum, and Melbourne Civil Liberties
lawyer Robert Richter QC, believe the federal government may not be able to stop Hicks
from keeping the profits from any book he writes about his involvement with the Taliban
in Afghanistan and his detention by the United States at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
But Mr Ruddock said today the advice he had received was that laws preventing convicted
criminals from profiting from their offences would apply in Hicks' case.
"We have looked very closely at this," he told Macquarie Radio.
"We looked at whether or not (because of) the changed nature of the military commissions
(the law) needed to be further amended, and the advice was very clear that it covered
this situation.
"I don't believe the advice is wrong."
However, he said if it turned out there was a loophole in the law, the government would
ensure it was quickly closed.
"He has pleaded guilty, he has been convicted, he will be serving out a sentence and
I don't see how the law will be inadequate," Mr Ruddock said.
"But let me just make it very clear if that law proved for some technical reason to
be deficient, I would seek to have it amended and I would do that quickly.
"It is appropriate for civil matters to do that. It's not appropriate in relation to
establishing criminal offences, but I think it is in civil matters."
Mr Ruddock said Hicks might be able to direct proceeds from a book or lectures towards
a charity of his choice, but the government would ensure that any proceeds he received
here or overseas would be recouped by the crown.
"Mr Hicks cannot make any money from it at all," he said.
"Look, I mean people have said he can talk and ask that any profits be given to his
favourite charity - that probably isn't covered."
Mr Ruddock declined to comment on the matter of profits paid to the Corby family from
the sale of convicted drug smuggler Schapelle's tell-all book, saying the matter was currently
before the courts.
Queensland's Court of Appeal last month froze money paid to the Corby family from the
sale of the book until a decision is made on whether the money will be paid to the commonwealth.
"There were some matters raised in relation to Corby," Mr Ruddock said.
"And in that matter I think it's before the courts and it would be inappropriate for
me to comment.
"But it does demonstrate that we take the issue of proceeds of crime profiting very seriously."

Fed: Saddam had proper trial says Howard
DONE
There's been a mixed reaction in Australia to the execution of SADDAM HUSSEIN.
JOHN HOWARD says a fair and proper trial was given to the former Iraqi dictator.. but
Labor says he shouldn't have been executed.
The prime minister says it's significant that SADDAM was given a proper trial and due
process was followed.
Mr HOWARD's called the Iraqis heroic because they were willing to go through the process
.. after going through all the pain and suffering he had caused.
But Labor leader KEVIN RUDD says even though the former dictator had committed mass
murder .. he did not deserve to be sentenced to death.
Mr RUDD doubts SADDAM's death will have any impact on the deadly sectarian unrest in Iraq.
Labor's foreign affairs spokesman ROBERT MCCLELLAND also says he doubts whether SADDAM's
execution will contribute to the resolution of the sectarian violence plaguing Iraq.
Mr MCCLELLAND says SADDAM should have been given a life sentence instead ... because
he's the type of criminal who deserves to rot in jail.
