NSW: Nuclear plans irresponsible: Democrats

SYDNEY, April 5 AAP - The drive for a second nuclear reactor in Sydney was irresponsiblein the absence of plans to handle the radioactive waste, Australian Democrats Leader NatashaStott Despoja said today.

Senator Stott Despoja said INVAP, the Argentinian firm contracted to build the $300million plant, was in a "precarious financial state" as the South American country's economycontinued to melt down.

She said South Australia was strongly against a plan to site a nuclear waste dump inits outback lands.

"Major issues such as these must be resolved as part of a stringent approval process, not deferred to some point in the future," Senator Stott Despoja said.

"The Science Minister (Peter McGauran)'s confidence that everything will be resolvedat some stage is irresponsible complacency."

Senator Stott Despoja said the federal government was hiding behind claims it couldnot release more information about the replacement reactor because of commercial reasonsand national security.

"The Australian Democrats will continue to oppose the reactor and to fight againsta decision made without openness, without accountability and without the support of theAustralian community," she said.
