Fed: Hockey calls on states to plan ahead

Financial Services Minister JOE HOCKEY has called on state and local governments to
use the Sydney Olympics as a model for planning for the future.

Mr HOCKEY says infrastructure planners need to look several decades into the future
and not just respond to today's problems.

He's told the Ten Network that 10 years prior to the Olympics, everyone came together
to plan how Sydney would cope with the Games.

He says that during the Olympics, the trains ran on time and older Australians were
quite prepared to walk through the city at midnight.

Mr HOCKEY says that spirit should continue for future planning of infrastructure for
larger populations.
